Warning issued: Earthquake expert says 'there are unnatural conditions'
Geoscientist Okan Tüysüz, making a statement regarding the aftershocks occurring in Sındırgı, Balıkesir, stated that the aftershocks will continue for a long time. Drawing attention to unnatural conditions in the region, Tüysüz said, "The spread area of the aftershocks has expanded."
Aftershocks continue following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. More than 4,000 aftershocks have been recorded since August 10. A 4.6 magnitude aftershock was recorded as the largest tremor.
Earth scientist Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz made statements regarding the aftershocks in the region.
Tüysüz stated, "The aftershocks, which have been continuing for 15 days, show an unusual situation. We are observing the aftershocks spreading over a wide area, and this indicates that the underground structure is of a different nature." Tüysüz also noted that they expect the aftershocks to continue for a long time.
Tüysüz said that there is no expectation of a major earthquake in the region and that the fault is not expected to produce a large tremor following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake. However, stating that the aftershocks could cause damage to houses, Tüysüz warned, "If there is damage to houses, these buildings should not be entered."
