Why is the CHP heading to an extraordinary convention?

The CHP is going through extraordinary days following the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu.

CHP leader Özgür Özel announced on Friday evening, March 21, that they have decided to hold an extraordinary convention and that the CHP will head to an extraordinary convention in no sooner than 15 days and no later than 45 days.

Özel stated, "March 30, 2025, is the day the extraordinary convention delegate lists will be posted, April 1 is the day the convention delegate lists will be taken down, objections will be evaluated and finalized, and April 6, 2025, is the day of the extraordinary convention."

Özgür Özel explained the reason for this decision by saying, "If we had not made our application for the extraordinary convention, they would have tried to take our primary election ballot box away from us by appointing a trustee toward the end of the workday today," stating that they had received intelligence that a trustee would be appointed to the CHP and that this decision eliminates the possibility of a trustee.

In response to the question "Can anyone be a candidate?", Özgür Özel replied, "There are no obstacles to running as a candidate in extraordinary conventions. All members of the Republican People's Party can be candidates."
