Why is there a boycott on April 2?
A general boycott decision has been taken for April 2 in Turkey. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel has also joined the boycott call initiated by universities.
Following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, 301 university students who participated in the rallies held in Saraçhane were detained and arrested. University students decided to hold a shopping boycott on April 2 to protest these arrests. Those participating in the boycott will not make any purchases from anywhere.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel also supported this action initiated by university students. In his post, Özel stated, "301 of the university students who stood at the forefront against the March 19 coup and claimed their future have been unlawfully arrested and are spending the holiday away from their families. I wholeheartedly support the consumption boycott initiated by the youth against this persecution of students, mothers, fathers, and siblings. I invite everyone to join this boycott and use their power that comes from consumption."
One-day shopping boycott actions have also frequently come to the agenda in the Balkans recently. The one-day shopping boycott actions that started in Croatia have also spread to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, and North Macedonia.
