Youth are pessimistic: These opportunities are out of reach
The global economic landscape has changed significantly. It has become difficult for many young people to access the opportunities their parents easily possessed. According to a report by Invested Media, younger generations worldwide are struggling to gain access to the financial stability and luxuries their parents enjoyed.
Single-income families
In the past, many families could get by on a single source of income with one family member staying at home to look after the children. This was a familiar scenario in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, however, dual-income families have become the new norm. The cost of living has risen, and a single salary is no longer enough to cover even the most basic expenses such as rent, healthcare, and education.
Affordable housing costs
In the 1950s and 1960s, it was somewhat more possible to become a homeowner with a single salary compared to today. With inflation and the cost of living increasing day by day, it now seems difficult for a household with two earners to become homeowners.
Health insurance
The cost of healthcare services has increased significantly, and many people are facing high premiums, deductibles, and co-payments. The coverage provided by state-supported employer-sponsored health insurance is quite low. Many individuals may find themselves forced to purchase their own insurance.
Vacation
In the past, many families around the world were able to afford a vacation every year, and many could stay in hotels or holiday resorts. Travel expenses were more manageable, and there were fewer additional fees. The cost of travel, including airfare, accommodation, and meals, has increased significantly. Now, many people prefer short-term stays or short trips to save money.
New car
In past years, it was possible to own a car with just a single salary. However, like housing, car prices have also been affected by inflation and have now reached a point where they can no longer be purchased with a single salary.
Large families
In the past, it was common for families to have three or more children. Today, however, many people prefer smaller families or are delaying having children due to financial constraints.
Private school education
The costs of private school education are rising rapidly. The increasing prices are due to many factors, such as the growing demand for prestigious education, high teacher salaries, and the sustainability costs of modern facilities and advanced educational programs.
Retirement at 65
Retirement at 65, pensions, and living off savings were once a realistic goal for many. Today, however, many people continue to work past the age of 65 due to the need to support themselves for longer years, driven by insufficient retirement savings, low pension payments, and increasing life expectancy.
Real estate for investment purposes
Investing in real estate was a common way to build wealth in the past. Property prices were lower, which made it easier for individuals and families to purchase homes and rental properties. Since rental income provided a steady stream of revenue and property values appreciated over time, the returns on these investments were often significant.
