She was attacked by 6 women in the middle of the street: The young woman recounted those moments
A young mother who was beaten in a street attack by 6 women while holding her 1.5-year-old baby in Antalya, and whose ordeal was recorded on a mobile phone, has spoken out.
In the incident that took place in the afternoon hours the other day on Aşık Veysel Street in the Yeşildere neighborhood of the Muratpaşa district, Ayten Merkavul, who was sitting on a bench at a bus stop with her 1.5-year-old baby and her mother-in-law, was attacked with kicks and punches by 6 women who got out of a black car with an unknown license plate that approached her. While the woman, who was subjected to the attack by 6 unidentified women, asked for help from those around her, one of the women who beat her recorded the moments on a mobile phone.
They shared the footage on social media
While Ayten Merkavul writhed in pain on the ground after being attacked by her own gender for minutes, the women involved in the incident drove away in the vehicle they arrived in. While the moment of the incident was reflected second by second on a security camera, the footage showed 6 people getting out of the vehicle and starting to beat the young woman sitting on the bench with her child. Following the incident, the young woman went to the police station to file a complaint against the individuals, and a few days later, the mobile phone footage of the moments the young woman was beaten was shared from an anonymous social media account.
Young woman recounts the moments
The young woman, who was attacked and beaten by 6 women in front of her little daughter, described those terrifying moments. Stating that the women getting out of the car and attacking her happened all at once and that she did not understand what was happening, Merkavul said, "I normally stay with my grandmother. That day, my mother-in-law came to pick me up. We were going to send money to my husband in prison and also go to visit them. We walked toward the main road from here; my baby, me, and my mother-in-law were waiting at the stop. A black vehicle, whose license plate I don't know, came quickly. We were sitting at the stop, my baby was in my arms. They started beating me directly," she said.
They both beat her and filmed it
Stating that she threw herself off the bench to protect her baby with maternal instinct as soon as the women started attacking her, the young woman said, "I pulled my hand away from my baby and immediately let myself drop off the bench. So that my baby wouldn't get hurt. There were 6 of them, they beat me quite a bit on the ground, they attacked me with kicks and punches. Then they tried to strip me. They took the wallet in my pocket. It contained some money I was going to send to my husband, some gold, and my ID. They beat me, and continued to attack me with kicks and punches while I was partially undressed. And by live-streaming these and sharing them on social media, they slandered my honor," she expressed.
"They beat me in front of my daughter's eyes"
Stating that her little daughter experienced great trauma due to the incident, Ayten Merkavul said, "I am only 21 years old and a mother of a 1.5-year-old girl. These things happened in front of my daughter's eyes. The bruises on my body will heal. These are not important, but no one can heal the trauma my baby experienced. When they ask my daughter 'What did they do to your mother,' my baby pulls her hair. They left a very big scar on my baby. These people should not be walking around freely. I am afraid, I cannot go out on the street. I cannot even take my baby out. I want my rights to be defended. I want them to receive the necessary punishment," she said.
"My family and I are in fear"
Stating that threats against her and her family have continued after the incident, the young woman said, "These are not normal things. These people are currently threatening us as well. They say things like 'We will put something around the house and report it' or 'We will catch her somewhere else, this time we will spray her and move on.'"
"I am under threat and pressure. As far as I know, they were detained yesterday, and I know they were taken to the courthouse today. I hope we get the news that they have been arrested. Because committing violence against a woman in front of her baby in this way is the greatest crime. They should not do these things to me, go unpunished, and walk around freely. My family is currently in fear that they will put something around the house. I am even more afraid, I hope we will be the winners," she said.
Released under judicial control
On the other hand, upon Ayten Merkavul going to the police station and filing a complaint against the individuals who beat her, the teams of the Antalya Police Department Public Security Branch launched an investigation to identify the vehicle and the women involved in the incident.
While the license plate of the vehicle was identified from the security camera, A.Ç., S.Ç., A.Ç., N.Ç., R.Ç., and P.D., who were determined to be involved in the incident of the young woman being beaten in the middle of the street, were detained in the evening hours the day before yesterday. The 6 women, whose statements were taken by the police, were released under judicial control by the court they were brought before after their procedures.
