What happens if Turkey advances?
Turkey and Hungary face each other for the second time this evening. Turkey defeated Hungary 3-1 in the first match and gained a significant advantage. So, what will happen if Turkey passes this round?
Turkey and Hungary are taking the field for the second leg of the Nations League A/B play-off match.
Turkey holds the advantage as they won the first match 3-1. Turkey will advance if they win, draw, or lose by a 1-goal margin. If the match ends with a 2-goal victory for Hungary, the game will go to extra time. For Hungary to advance at the end of 90 minutes, they must win by at least a 3-goal margin.
To understand why this match is being played, we need to look back a little.
Turkey competed in Group 4 of League B in the UEFA Nations League. Competing against Wales, Iceland, and Montenegro, Turkey finished the group in 2nd place with 11 points.
Hungary, on the other hand, was in Group 3 of League A in the UEFA Nations League. Hungary finished 3rd with 6 points in a group that included Germany, the Netherlands, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
If Turkey advances, they will be promoted from League B to League A in the Nations League. If Hungary advances, they will continue to play in League A of the Nations League.
If Turkey does not advance, they will continue to play in League B of the Nations League. If Hungary does not advance, they will be relegated from League A to League B in the Nations League.
