The best restaurants of 2025 announced: Maido takes the top spot

Led by Peruvian chef Mitsuharu Tsumura, Maido was named the best of the year for its unique style that combines Latin American cuisine with Japanese techniques. Maido, which ranked fifth last year, surpassed Barcelona's famous restaurant Disfrutar to take the top spot on the list. Speaking at the ceremony, Tsumura received a standing ovation, stating, “Environmental sustainability is talked about a lot, but we ignore human sustainability. Food has the power to bring people together.”

This year's ranking was determined by the votes of more than a thousand gastronomy experts from around the world. Prominent names in the industry were recognized with special awards. Chef Pichaya “Pam” Soontornyanakij of Potong in Bangkok was awarded the Best Female Chef title, while Mindy Woods from Australia received the “Champions of Change” award. Parisian Maxime Frederic was named “The World’s Best Pastry Chef.” Additionally, Albert Adrià, chef of Enigma in Barcelona, was the recipient of the Estrella Damm Chefs' Choice Award.

NEW NAMES AND RISERS IN THE TOP 20

Significant changes occurred in the top 20 of the list. Copenhagen's experimental restaurant Alchemist drew attention by rising from eighth to fifth place. Paris's Table by Bruno Verjus restaurant fell from third to eighth place. London's innovative restaurant Ikoyi achieved great success by rising to 15th place this year from 42nd last year.

Italy showed a strong presence in the top 20 with three restaurants: Lido 84 (16th place), Reale (18th place), and Atelier Moessmer Norbert Niederkofler (20th place).

The world's 50 best restaurants list covers a wide geography from Latin America to Europe, and from Asia to the Middle East. Restaurants such as Kjolle (Peru), Don Julio (Argentina), Gaggan (Thailand), and Atomix (USA) stand out for the importance they place on sustainability, the use of local products, and cultural diversity.
