A 1 in 10,000 case: He thought he was gaining weight, but was shocked to learn the truth after surgery!

Ahmet Demir, a 46-year-old resident of Ankara, visited the Ankara Sincan Training and Research Hospital due to complaints of hardness and swelling in his stomach. Initially dismissing the situation and believing he was gaining weight, Demir learned through examinations that he was carrying a rare, giant 7.5-kilogram kidney mass. It was stated that Demir lost a total of 11 kilograms after the treatment process.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serdar Toksöz, Head of the Urology Clinic at Sincan Training and Research Hospital, stated that the patient was referred to Ankara from Hatay, saying, "A large mass was detected in his abdomen there. He was referred to us for further examination and treatment. In our evaluation, we determined that this was a large kidney mass. This is one of the rarely detected cases. Its treatment is also carried out in quite advanced, experienced centers."

"KIDNEY MASSES THIS LARGE ARE SEEN IN 1 OUT OF 10,000 CASES"

Stating that open surgery is generally preferred for such large masses, Toksöz said, "It would have required an incision of nearly 40 cm. With the method we planned, after gradually reducing this incision and shrinking the mass, we performed the surgery laparoscopically through 3 holes. Kidney masses this large are seen in approximately 1 out of 10,000 cases. The patient also had a stone inside the kidney."

Emphasizing that serious health problems could develop due to the mass, Toksöz noted, "This large kidney mass of Mr. Ahmet could have caused hypertension. There was also a serious infection in the fluid we drained. It can also cause serious infection. It can cause infections that affect the other kidney as well. Stones can also cause kidney masses as a result of irritation," he reported.

"HE THOUGHT HE WAS GAINING WEIGHT"

Stating that Demir did not suspect a mass, Toksöz shared the following information:

"The surgical procedure lasted approximately 6 hours. A very large kidney mass was adhered to the liver, intestines, and major blood vessels. We proceeded slowly, step by step, and in a controlled manner, performing this procedure without damaging any of the patient's organs. Our patient felt more like he had gained weight in his abdomen. Because it grew gradually, he had not realized it. He thought he was gaining weight. Generally, sometimes these kidney masses do not cause pain while growing. A growth process that gets the body used to it can occur. The best method for this is to go for doctor check-ups at regular intervals."

Emphasizing that the surgery was successful, Toksöz said, "After the surgery, there is no damage to other organs. Both his intestines and liver are functioning quite well and appropriately."

GRADUALLY GROWING MASS MADE HIS LIFE DIFFICULT

Ahmet Demir stated that his first complaints were swelling and hardness in the stomach area, saying, "It started to appear rapidly and clearly recently, and because it began to restrict my movements, I applied for help. They said this was a condition that had started and continued for more than 5 years, and they immediately started the procedures," he spoke.

Saying that his daily life was seriously affected before the surgery, Demir expressed, "I had many movement restrictions in my work life. Bending, getting up, turning—for example, I could only sleep on my left side. I could not lie on my back."

"APPROXIMATELY 11-12 KILOGRAMS WERE REMOVED FROM ME"

Stating that he felt lighter after the surgery, Demir said, "There were gaps in my stomach. I didn't understand the details of that during the hospital period, but after I stood up, approximately 11-12 kilograms were removed from me. With the relief and lightness of this, my movements became more agile and quick. Whether it's my sleep or my body, I have reached a more comfortable level."
