Death rates in Turkey decreased in 2024, with the highest mortality rate recorded in Kastamonu.

2024 death statistics released

The Turkish Statistical Institute has released the statistics on deaths and causes of death for the year 2024. According to the data, the number of deaths, which was 526 thousand 416 in 2023, fell to 489 thousand 361 in 2024. Men accounted for 54.8 percent of the deaths, while women accounted for 45.2 percent.

The crude death rate, which is the number of deaths per thousand people, fell from 6.2 per thousand in 2023 to 5.7 per thousand in 2024. This decline means that while there were 6.2 deaths per thousand people in 2023, this number decreased to 5.7 in 2024.

Kastamonu was the province with the highest crude death rate in 2024, at 10.4 per thousand. Sinop, Edirne, and Balıkesir were also among the provinces with high death rates. Hakkari, on the other hand, drew attention as the province with the lowest death rate at 2.2 per thousand.

When the causes of death were examined, circulatory system diseases ranked first at 36.0 percent. This was followed by tumors at 16.3 percent and respiratory system diseases at 15.0 percent. The majority of deaths due to circulatory system diseases were caused by ischemic heart diseases.

The number of infant deaths also fell from 9 thousand 731 in 2023 to 8 thousand 475 in 2024. While the infant mortality rate decreased from 10.1 per thousand to 9.0 per thousand, the under-five mortality rate also fell from 14.7 per thousand to 11.1 per thousand.
