6 villages quarantined in Elazığ

An outbreak of the highly contagious sheep and goat pox has caused alarm in several rural neighborhoods in the province of Elazığ. Authorities acted quickly after symptoms such as eye and nasal discharge, as well as skin blisters and crusted sores, were observed. The outbreak, which began in the village of Çalık where the first cases were detected, spread to neighboring villages in a short time.

Following the detection of cases in the villages of Büklümlü, Ulupınar, Bahçeli, and Bademli in addition to Çalık, it was decided to implement quarantine measures in a total of six villages. During the quarantine period, the entry and exit of live animals in these villages have been prohibited to prevent the spread of the disease.

Sheep and goat pox primarily affects small livestock such as sheep and goats, manifesting with symptoms like high fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Blisters and sores forming around the face, ears, lips, udder, and abdominal region are among the typical signs of the disease. Experts state that the disease can be transmitted both through the respiratory tract and through contact with infected animals.

It is emphasized that if there is no early intervention when the disease is first observed, it can spread rapidly through herds and lead to significant losses. Authorities in the region have warned farmers to closely monitor their animals for symptoms and to report any suspicious cases immediately.
