A new outbreak has emerged: 115 people affected
The infection of 102 passengers and 13 crew members with Norovirus on a cruise ship departing from the US has brought global outbreak concerns back to the agenda.
A Norovirus alarm has been issued on the cruise ship "Caribbean Princess," which departed from the US state of Florida. On the cruise, which set sail from Port Everglades on April 28, 102 passengers and 13 crew members were infected with the virus while the ship was at sea. While the ship is scheduled to reach Port Canaveral on May 11, it is expected to make a stop at the port of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic.
Experts pointed out that Norovirus can spread rapidly, especially in enclosed spaces, and warned that cases of nausea, severe vomiting, and diarrhea among passengers could increase. This development has led to the tightening of disinfection and isolation measures, which were implemented following similar incidents in March.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that it has begun closely monitoring the outbreak on the ship. Officials reported that cleaning efforts on the ship have been intensified against new infections caused by Norovirus and that additional measures are being implemented to reduce the risk of transmission.
The fact that the Norovirus case is occurring simultaneously with the dangerous Hantavirus outbreak, which is spread globally through rodents, has increased public anxiety. These infections, to which passengers gathered in an enclosed space were exposed, have refreshed memories of the pandemic and heightened public concern.
Known as the stomach flu and resistant to alcohol-based disinfectants, Norovirus presents with symptoms such as severe abdominal cramps, intense vomiting, and watery diarrhea. The CDC emphasizes that soap and water play a key role in preventing the spread of the virus, that there is no specific treatment method, and that fluid replacement is of vital importance.
It is noted that the infection shows symptoms within 12 to 48 hours after contact with the virus, with vomiting being more prominent in children and diarrhea in adults. On the other hand, mild fever and fatigue can also accompany the illness.
It was reported that the CDC and other health organizations will continue their intervention and isolation measures on the ship, and that preparations are being made at the highest level to prevent the emergence of new cases.
