Another harm of smoking identified: 250 percent higher

In a study conducted by scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark, another negative effect of smoking on human health has been identified.

It has been announced that smoking, which has many harmful effects ranging from cancer to heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory ailments, also negatively impacts mental health. Scientists have revealed that smoking is a cause of conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

RISK INCREASES BY 250 PERCENT

Dr. Doug Speed, the scientist who led the research, stated, "The numbers tell the whole story. Smoking damages mental health. Although it is not the sole cause, smoking increases the risk of being hospitalized due to mental health issues by 250 percent."

Speed and two scientists in Canada accessed and analyzed data from the UK Biobank. In the study conducted at this institution, which holds one of the world's largest databases on human health, experts also examined the ages at which individuals start smoking.

The study noted, "They start smoking before their mental health issues begin. On average, people start smoking at age 17, and on average, they begin experiencing mental health problems at age 30."

Speed added, "There are certain genes linked to smoking. In non-smokers, these genes do not trigger mental health disorders."
