Attention to chronic kidney disease: Early diagnosis is vital

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is defined as a long-term health problem in which kidney functions are gradually lost. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Şahin from the Nephrology Department of İstanbul Okan University Hospital shared valuable information about the causes and diagnostic methods of this disease.

CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE: A GROWING PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) stands out as a significant health problem that is common worldwide and in Turkey, threatening public health. Although the disease can be prevented or its progression slowed down through early diagnosis, it is emphasized that awareness rates on this subject are low. According to research conducted by the Turkish Society of Nephrology, the rate of patients who are aware of their condition in serious CKD cases remains below 10%.

Due to a lack of awareness, many people are diagnosed only when the disease reaches advanced stages, which leads to the implementation of treatment options such as dialysis or kidney transplantation.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DIAGNOSIS AND EARLY DETECTION

The diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is based on abnormalities in kidney function tests that persist for more than three months. To evaluate kidney functions, creatinine levels are measured and the filtering capacity of the kidneys is calculated. If the filtration rate remains below 60 ml/min for more than three months, a diagnosis of CKD is made. In addition, abnormalities such as protein leakage in urine and changes detected via ultrasonography or biopsy also play an important role in the diagnostic process.

From the early stages of CKD, the risk of death due to cardiovascular complications increases in patients. Therefore, diagnosing the disease in its early stages and taking the necessary precautions is of critical importance in increasing the life expectancy and quality of life of patients.

ONE IN EVERY 7 ADULTS IS AT RISK

According to a study conducted in Turkey in 2012, chronic kidney disease (CKD) is detected in one out of every 7 adults. Individuals with a history of diabetes, hypertension, and kidney stones, as well as those with a family history of kidney disease, are in the high-risk group for CKD.

Experts emphasize that it is of great importance for these high-risk individuals to undergo regular health check-ups and to slow the progression of the disease through early diagnosis. It is also stated that controlling complications and making lifestyle changes to prevent the disease play a critical role in the treatment process.

Chronic kidney disease is a condition that is common in society and can lead to serious health problems due to a lack of awareness. With early diagnosis and regular follow-up, the progression of the disease can be prevented. It is vital for individuals in the risk group, in particular, not to neglect their regular check-ups in order to prevent health problems associated with CKD.
