Bacterial alert for children's cough syrup in the US

US-based Medtech Products Inc. has decided to recall its children's cough syrup, Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup, due to concerns regarding potential bacterial contamination and shelf-life safety. This move by the company has caused concern, particularly among families with children.

In a statement issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it was noted that the syrup in question may be contaminated with the bacterium Bacillus cereus. This bacterium can cause serious health problems and, in rare cases, death when ingested in high amounts.

The FDA reported that Bacillus cereus contamination typically manifests with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and that these symptoms usually appear within 1 to 16 hours after consuming the product. It was emphasized that the risk is higher, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

While there have been no reports of serious adverse events submitted to the FDA to date, the agency has advised those who have used the syrup to stop using the product immediately and to consult a healthcare professional if any symptoms occur.

The recall covers all 4 fluid ounce (approximately 118 ml) bottles of Little Remedies Honey Cough Syrup sold between December 14, 2022, and June 4, 2025, that have not yet reached their expiration date. The syrup was sold in amber glass bottles inside an outer carton. The FDA has also shared a list containing the UPC and lot numbers of the product with the public.

It was also stated that the recall only covers this specific product and that there is no risk associated with the brand's other products.
