Beware of lymphoma's silent progression: Stay alert for these 7 symptoms
Experts warn that lymphoma can progress insidiously in its early stages, urging individuals to consult a physician if they notice certain symptoms, ranging from fatigue to persistent swelling.
Lymphoma, commonly known as lymph node cancer, can develop in the body without showing obvious symptoms. According to warnings from hematology specialists, swellings that appear in the neck, armpits, and groin area and do not go away for a long time are sometimes mistaken for simple health issues and ignored. However, this neglect can significantly reduce the chances of treating the disease.
Hematology Specialist Dr. Buğra Sağlam, who practices in Gaziantep, stated that although awareness of lymphoma has increased in society in recent years, many patients fail to notice the symptoms in time. Dr. Sağlam emphasized the vital importance of not ignoring symptoms, saying, "We encounter many patients who wait for months, thinking that swellings appearing in the neck, armpits, or groin are 'unimportant.' Unfortunately, this waiting period can cause the disease to progress."
Lymphoma is often confused with common ailments such as the flu, fatigue, or simple malaise. It is recommended that individuals experiencing one or more symptoms such as prolonged fever, night sweats, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, constant fatigue, and palpable swellings on the body seek an expert opinion without delay.
Dr. Sağlam stated, "Lymphoma is a disease that can be controlled at a high rate when caught at the right stage. We now have many treatment options. We create an individual treatment plan based on the person's disease type, age, and general health status."
Underlining that PET-CT, advanced blood tests, and biopsies play an important role in the diagnostic stage, Sağlam noted that every lymphoma patient can have a different profile, which is why the treatment process is tailored to the individual.
Addressing those who do not feel well and observe changes in their body for which they cannot explain the cause, Dr. Sağlam said, "Do not take it lightly when you notice a change in your body that you think is not normal. Early diagnosis is the most critical step in lymphoma treatment. The sooner you come, the higher our chances of treatment will be."
It is stated that the most important step in protecting against lymphoma is regular doctor check-ups and being sensitive to changes in the body. This is because, with modern medical methods, it has now become possible to achieve successful results in lymphoma. Experts state that raising awareness throughout society on this issue will increase the early diagnosis rate and treatment success of the disease.
