Flu cases on the rise: 8 deaths in a short period

Across Greece, the number of hospital admissions due to the flu has increased significantly in recent days. Emergency departments, particularly in hospitals in Athens, are facing serious congestion. At the "Agia Sofia" Children's Hospital in the capital, more than 160 children were examined by doctors in just a few hours. Similarly, it was reported that over 250 people were treated at "Laiko" Hospital and more than 100 at "Sotiria" Hospital for respiratory infections and flu symptoms.

Experts report that flu cases in the country are on an upward trend and that high-risk groups, in particular, need to be careful.

In a statement from the National Public Health Organization of Greece (EODY), it was stated that 8 people have lost their lives due to the flu in the last seven days, more than 870 patients have been hospitalized, and 15 people are currently in intensive care units. The organization shared the information that, "While most healthy individuals overcome the illness mildly and in a short time, serious complications can be seen in those in the risk group."

In statements made by officials, it was underlined that individuals in the risk group, especially the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, and those with weakened immune systems, should get their flu vaccinations. It was once again emphasized that the vaccine significantly reduces the likelihood of severe illness and hospitalization.

While the continued spread of the flu epidemic in the country is causing concern, health authorities are calling on the public to follow hygiene rules and implement preventive measures.
