Frightening pandemic warning from the United Nations: "We are not ready"

Stating that necessary lessons must be learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, Guterres said, "We must do better when the next pandemic arrives. However, we are not ready for the next pandemic."

Noting that COVID-19 is no longer approached with the same urgency in the international health sector but that its devastating effects still persist, Guterres stated that the economic impacts of the pandemic also continue.

Guterres noted that many health systems are struggling with serious challenges and that millions of people in developing countries lack access to vaccines.

"THE TENDENCY TO HOARD MUST BE ABANDONED"

Using the words, "We must do better when the next pandemic arrives. However, we are not ready for the next pandemic," Guterres stated that the necessary lessons must be learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and action must be taken accordingly.

Pointing out that the world must act in cooperation for the monitoring of viruses, the strengthening of health systems, and the construction of universal health coverage, Guterres emphasized that wealthy countries must abandon the tendency to control and hoard resources and treatments.

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on December 27, 2020, to learn lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and to be prepared for future pandemics.

In accordance with the resolution, December 27 was declared the "International Day of Epidemic Preparedness."
