Function of the thymus gland rediscovered: The secret key to healthy aging

Two comprehensive scientific studies conducted recently show that the thymus gland, which was thought to cease functioning in adults, still performs vital roles. In these studies, particularly those led by Mass General Brigham researchers and analyzed with the support of artificial intelligence, it was determined that thymus activity in adulthood may be much more important than previously thought. Located in the chest cavity and long believed to lose its function after puberty, this organ is effective on various body systems, from the production of immune cells to protection against heart disease.

NEW FINDINGS EMERGED WITH AI SUPPORT

Traditionally, it was thought that the thymus gland gradually shrank and lost its function after puberty. However, as researchers analyzed tens of thousands of computed tomography (CT) scans with artificial intelligence, it was discovered that thymus activity in adult individuals is highly variable. Research leader Prof. Hugo Aerts states that individuals whose thymus remains active have a significantly higher life expectancy and that these individuals also maintain strong heart health.

It has now been clearly demonstrated that the thymus gland is responsible for the formation of immune cells in the body; specifically, it is the production center for T cells. This leads to a reduced risk of both cancer and cardiovascular diseases in individuals whose organ functions effectively.

PLAYS A CRITICAL ROLE IN CANCER TREATMENT AS WELL

One of the striking results of the study is that the thymus gland strengthens the response to immune-based therapy in cancer patients. It was determined that in cancer patients with a healthy thymus, the disease progression rate was 37 percent lower, and the mortality rate was 44 percent lower. It was confirmed that a thymus where T cells are actively produced extends life expectancy, especially in individuals undergoing immunotherapy.

LIFESTYLE AFFECTS THYMUS HEALTH

Researchers also warn about the factors that affect the ability of the thymus gland to remain healthy over time. It was emphasized that smoking, obesity, and chronic inflammation rapidly impair the function of this organ, while healthy nutrition and regular lifestyle habits support the thymus. It is stated that protecting the thymus protects the body not only against infections but also against serious diseases such as heart failure and cancer.

A NEW ERA IN PERSONALIZED TREATMENT

In light of these findings, experts predict that monitoring thymus functions will become routine in the future and will play an important role in personalized treatments. With the monitoring of the thymus, it is expected that new strategies will be developed regarding which treatments patients might respond to better or how aging processes can be slowed down. Once considered insignificant, the thymus is now accepted as one of the most critical building blocks of healthy aging.
