Hope against dry eye with plant cells: A new method developed from spinach has been tested

Researchers at the National University of Singapore have developed a special eye drop using structures called "thylakoids," which they isolated from spinach plants, to combat the problem of dry eye. These cell components, which play a role in photosynthesis, contribute to the production of beneficial antioxidants on the eye's surface when they come into contact with light.

In the method applied in both laboratory and animal experiments, it was observed that thylakoids applied as drops reduced inflammation and increased tear production. Notably, remarkable results were achieved in terms of less damage occurring on the eye surface and the alleviation of irritation.

Dry eye is known as a condition that affects an increasing number of people and can negatively impact daily life. The experts leading the research believe that the medical applications of plant-derived bio-structures will continue to expand; however, they also emphasize that additional studies are needed before the method can be widely applied in humans.

In statements regarding the new treatment method, it was noted that, "More research is needed for widespread human use, but the findings obtained show that bio-molecules derived from plants can be beneficial for conditions such as dry eye."

This development is seen as an exciting glimmer of hope for patients and experts searching for alternative medical approaches. In the future, it is thought that similar bio-structures could also be used for different diseases.
