Hospitals filled with amateur butchers on the first day of Eid al-Adha

With the arrival of the first day of the holiday, many people across Turkey headed to hospitals following unwanted accidents during the traditional slaughter of sacrificial animals. The most common injury cases involved amateur butchers cutting themselves with knives. According to initial unofficial reports, at least 306 people across the country sought medical attention at emergency departments.

The highest number of injuries was recorded in Şanlıurfa, where 232 people were treated for cuts and similar wounds. In Afyonkarahisar, 40 people applied to emergency services. In Malatya, approximately 30 people received hospital treatment for cuts on various parts of their bodies. In Gaziantep, three citizens, and in Kocaeli, one citizen were taken to the hospital after being injured during the slaughtering process.

The injuries seen in emergency rooms were mostly in the form of cuts to hands, arms, and fingers. Experts stated that most of these types of accidents are preventable and called for caution.

Emergency medicine specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarper Yılmaz stated in his remarks on the subject that the most common cases during the holiday are "amateur butcher" injuries. Yılmaz noted, "We see serious injuries not only while slaughtering the sacrificial animal but also while butchering meat at home," pointing out that it can be risky for citizens to sometimes attempt to treat such cuts at home. He added, "Some cuts that appear minor can lead to serious complications if not treated properly."
