Norovirus alert follows Hantavirus scare: 1,700 people quarantined on cruise ship
More than 1,700 people are being held in quarantine at the port after passengers on a large cruise ship docked in Bordeaux began showing symptoms of illness.
Passengers and crew were not permitted to leave the cruise ship that docked at the port of Bordeaux on Tuesday evening due to fears of a sudden outbreak. Authorities acted quickly after a 90-year-old passenger passed away and dozens of people reported stomach ailments.
There are a total of 1,233 passengers and 514 crew members on the quarantined ship. The majority of the passengers are British and Irish tourists. It was reported that nausea and similar symptoms have been observed in 50 passengers so far.
Health teams have begun laboratory examinations and are continuing to work on samples to determine whether the symptoms are caused by norovirus. Health officials are intervening meticulously to bring the situation on the ship under control.
While the giant cruise ship is being held at the port due to the quarantine, security measures have been increased to prevent the spread of a potential outbreak that could threaten the health of thousands of people.
