Students at this school learn both how to play the piano and how to grow vegetables

ANTALYA (AA) - SÜLEYMAN ELÇİN - In Antalya,'at the Nebi Güney İmam Hatip Secondary School,'students learn to play the piano and violin, use a drill, repair plumbing, raise chickens, and grow vegetables, in addition to their regular coursework.

At the secondary school in the Kepez district, projects are implemented in addition to the curriculum to ensure students develop an interest in art and sports, acquire basic life skills, learn about nature and animals, and experience the joy of producing rather than just consuming.

"There is a Farm at School" Within the scope of the project, a coop was built in the school garden where students care for nearly 50'chickens, from which they collect daily eggs, as well as two pygmy goats.

In the school garden, where each class is assigned a separate planting area in the greenhouse, students grow vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, and learn to cook local dishes in the kitchen workshop with their teachers using the produce they harvest.

Through this practice, students gain knowledge about both animal husbandry and agricultural production.

Students who create products such as vases, wall decorations, and jugs in the school's ceramics workshop also acquire basic life skills in the life skills workshop, including simple repair tasks like fixing a dripping faucet, changing a light bulb, and using a drill, as well as doing laundry, washing dishes, and ironing.

"Every Student Should Be Able to Play an Instrument" project, students receive lessons in piano, violin, ney, and guitar in the music workshops created.

Students are also provided with training in coding, 3D drawing, design, and building and flying drones in the robotics coding workshop, and in making wooden model airplanes, toy cars, and chess pieces in the woodworking workshop.

Students receive training in soccer, basketball, volleyball, archery, karate, taekwondo, and kickboxing in the school's indoor and outdoor sports halls.

– "Students are very happy when they produce something"

School Principal Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yavuz Selim Bayburtlu stated that they carry out educational and training activities at the school with 1,063 students and 81 teachers.

Expressing that they implement various projects with the aim of going beyond traditional schools, Bayburtlu noted that they are intensively applying the Turkey Century Education Model Curriculum developed by the Ministry'at their school.

Explaining that they have established various workshops to provide students with life skills, language training, and manual skills alongside academic knowledge, Bayburtlu spoke as follows:

"In the workshops, children learn by doing and experiencing, and they produce goods. We bring special ceramic clay from Kütahya.'Students create a product according to the theme of each month. They bake and paint them in a ceramic kiln. Students are very happy when they produce something. All students at this school can play an instrument such as the piano or violin. We also teach students how to fix a dripping faucet, use a drill, and cook meals. Through our farm and greenhouse, we aim for students to understand agricultural production and grow up with a love for animals."

- "We love the chickens and goats as soon as we arrive in the morning."

13-year-old student Berrak Nisa Küçükler said she loves the robotics coding workshop very much.

Stating that she experiences the joy of eating the produce she grows in the greenhouse fresh, Küçükler added, "We love our school very much. We love the chickens and goats as soon as we arrive in the morning. During the day, we also make beautiful products in the ceramics and woodworking workshops." she said.

Another student, Hiranur Merde, expressed that she sometimes feels like she is on a farm.

Stating that she most enjoys collecting eggs from the chickens, Merde explained that the various workshops at the school also increase her motivation for her lessons.
