The habit of rubbing eyes threatens eye health
If your eyes are constantly itchy and you rub them, experts warn that this habit can lead to serious eye diseases.
Discomfort and itching in the eyes are common problems that many people encounter in their daily lives. However, there is an issue that experts are drawing attention to: while bringing your hands to your eyes frequently may provide short-term relief, it can pose serious risks to your eye health in the long run. Factors such as allergies, dry eye, and environmental conditions, in particular, cause this habit to become widespread.
According to ophthalmologists, one of the primary causes of eye itching is eye allergies, known as allergic conjunctivitis. In addition to this, dry eye, eyelid infections, and environmental factors are among the main reasons behind frequent eye rubbing. Eye fatigue and dryness can be seen, especially in people who look at computer screens for long periods; this increases the tendency to rub the eyes.
CAN WEAKEN VISION QUALITY
Experts warn that constant and vigorous rubbing of the eyes can cause weakening of the cornea, the transparent layer of the eye. One of the most dangerous consequences of this condition is a disease called "keratoconus," which causes the cornea to thin and become cone-shaped. When keratoconus develops, problems such as blurred vision, sensitivity to light, and burning can occur.
In some cases, applying hard pressure to the eye can also lead to small scratches or injuries on the surface of the cornea. In such a situation, patients may experience symptoms such as pain, loss of clarity in vision, and light sensitivity.
CAN BE AN OPEN DOOR FOR INFECTIONS
Bacteria and viruses that accumulate on the hands throughout the day can be carried directly to the eye surface by rubbing the eyes. As experts underline, lack of attention to hygiene and constant eye rubbing open the doors to many eye infections, especially conjunctivitis.
On the other hand, even if this habit provides short-term relief in individuals with an allergic constitution, it can increase the recurrence and even the severity of the itching because the body releases more substances such as histamine, which triggers the allergy, during rubbing.
HEALTHY ALTERNATIVES AND EXPERT ADVICE
Experts recommend choosing artificial tear drops or cold compresses instead of rubbing the eyes when there is a feeling of itching or discomfort in the eyes. Furthermore, applying appropriate treatment methods for allergy-related problems is considered important. It is also recommended to consult an ophthalmologist without delay when complaints such as constant itching, redness, pain, or blurred vision are experienced in the eyes.
It is emphasized that despite its short-term soothing effect, this habit can cause quite serious long-term damage to eye health. For this reason, when you feel the need to rub your eyes, investigating the underlying cause first and applying direct treatment methods stands out as a much safer path.
