Those who eat dark chocolate do not age
A new study has revealed that theobromine, a substance found in dark chocolate, may slow down biological aging.
Scientists state that dark chocolate has the potential to slow down the aging process. However, it is emphasized that this effect applies only to dark chocolate, and that milk chocolate does not show the same effect. Researchers from King’s College London discovered that a natural compound called theobromine plays a significant role in this process.
In the study published in the journal Aging, theobromine levels in the blood of more than 1,600 participants were examined. The research showed that individuals with high levels of theobromine had a biological age that was younger than their chronological age. This finding offers important clues that theobromine may slow down the aging process.
Prof. Jordana Bell from King’s College London stated that they found a link between theobromine, an important component of dark chocolate, and staying young. However, she emphasized that this does not mean more chocolate should be consumed. Bell expressed that the study offers clues regarding healthy aging.
The researchers also investigated whether other compounds found in cocoa and coffee show similar effects. However, the data obtained revealed that the anti-aging effect is limited only to theobromine. The lead researcher of the study, Dr. Ramy Saad, stated that this discovery could contribute to the understanding of the aging process and various diseases.
The health benefits of dark chocolate are also noteworthy. Experts state that this chocolate contains antioxidants that may reduce the risk of heart disease, dementia, and certain types of cancer. Furthermore, it is stated that it may support circulation, balance cholesterol levels, and positively affect brain functions.
Nutritionists recommend choosing products with at least 70 percent cocoa content when selecting dark chocolate. They also warn that excessive consumption may create negative effects due to high calorie and sugar content.
