Virtual gambling threatens the mental health of young people

Virtual gambling, one of the new addictions brought about by the digital age, is emerging as a significant issue threatening the mental health of young people. Psychiatrist Dr. Burçin Nuri Akal stated that this addiction is not merely a habit for entertainment purposes, but can also lead to serious psychiatric and social consequences.

Dr. Akal noted that virtual gambling affects the dopamine reward system in a manner similar to addictive substances like alcohol and tobacco. "This addiction causes individuals to lose control and turn to gambling with a constant desire to win," he said. He emphasized that during this process, attention deficit, impulsivity, and a tendency to take risks increase.

THE FOUNDATION OF ADDICTION IS LAID AT AN EARLY AGE

Stating that a virtual gambling habit starting in adolescence can lead to serious psychiatric problems in later years, Akal said that factors such as low self-esteem and loneliness trigger the addiction. He expressed that vulnerable personality structures are at higher risk in this regard.

Virtual gambling addiction is often seen alongside depression, anxiety, social isolation, and suicidal thoughts. Dr. Akal said, "These individuals often feel guilty and worthless. These negative emotions can lead the person to turn to gambling again."

Drawing attention to the importance of early diagnosis in the treatment process, Dr. Akal stated that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), family therapies, and support groups play an important role. He added that antidepressants or medications that increase impulse control can also be used when necessary. He emphasized that internet-based therapy methods make treatment sustainable by facilitating access and highlighted the importance of activating social support mechanisms.

Dr. Akal stated that virtual gambling addiction weakens social bonds, increases economic problems, and seriously impairs an individual's mental health. He warned, "If not intervened early, both the individual and social burden will deepen."
