17th hearing begins: Prosecutor presents opinion in Çorlu train massacre case

The 17th hearing of the case regarding the train accident that occurred on July 8, 2018, in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ, which claimed the lives of 25 people, including 7 children, and left more than 300 injured, began today at the Çorlu 1st High Criminal Court.

In the Çorlu Train Massacre Case, the prosecutor requested sentences for 13 individuals for negligent homicide.

Mısra Öz, who lost her son Oğuz Arda Sel in the accident, stated that they would apply to the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights to ensure that high-level officials are put on trial.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The train, which departed from the Uzunköprü district of Edirne bound for Halkalı, Istanbul, carrying 362 passengers and 6 crew members, derailed and overturned near Sarılar neighborhood in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ on July 8, 2018. 25 people, including seven children, died in the accident, and 328 people were injured.

The Çorlu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit at the Çorlu 1st High Criminal Court against Turgut Kurt, who served as the manager at the TCDD 1st Regional Directorate Halkalı 14th Railway Maintenance Directorate and was found at fault for the accident; Özkan Polat, a Road Maintenance and Repair Chief working at the Çerkezköy Road Maintenance Chief's Office; Celaleddin Çabuk, a Line Maintenance and Repair Officer at the Road Maintenance Chief's Office; and Çetin Yıldırım, a Bridges Chief working within TCDD who signed the annual general inspection report in May, seeking prison sentences of 2 to 15 years each for 'causing death and injury by negligence'.
