In Turkey, there are 835 cases per judge
CHP Party Assembly Member, Ankara Deputy, and Constitutional Committee Member Umut Akdoğan stated that there are 835 cases per judge. Akdoğan said, "Even if a judge took no leave, working every single day of the 365 days including holidays and weekends, they would have to handle 2.2 cases per day."
Evaluating the Ministry of Justice's 2024 Budget Proposal submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), CHP's Umut Akdoğan pointed out that the number of cases per judge and prosecutor is increasing every year.
According to the report in Cumhuriyet, Akdoğan said, "When we look at the Ministry's data, we see that in 2021, there was an average of 747 cases per judge. The Ministry had aimed to reduce the average number of cases per judge to 621 in 2022, but instead of decreasing, this number rose to 785 in 2022. This year, the target was 741, but the number of cases per judge has already reached 835. In this situation, the Ministry had to update its 2024 target, which it had projected as 714, to 830. If the government evaluated the current situation and its causes with objective criteria instead of setting imaginary targets, it would not be difficult to change this picture and reach ideal goals."
Drawing attention to the number of cases per prosecutor, Akdoğan said the following:
"In 2021, there was an average of 1,421 cases per prosecutor. It was aimed to reduce this to 1,313 in 2022, but contrary to a decrease, there was an increase here as well, and it was seen that 1,543 cases fell per prosecutor at the end of the year. In 2023, a target of 300 cases per prosecutor had been set, but this year the number of cases per prosecutor has already reached 1,580; here too, targets had to be updated, and the 2024 target was revised from 1,275 to 1,550."
