Appeal in İmamoğlu's diploma case moved to the Council of State

A significant stage has been reached in the legal battle initiated by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and Republican People's Party presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu against the decision to cancel his university diploma. Following the rejection of the appeal request by the 7th Administrative Litigation Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Administrative Court, İmamoğlu's lawyers have filed an application with the Council of State to appeal the case.

In the petition submitted to the high court by the lawyers, it was argued that the diploma cancellation was issued for political reasons, and it was stated that the decision in question contradicts both the principle of the rule of law and acquired rights. Furthermore, it was noted that the principle of an impartial judge and the right to a reasoned decision were not observed during the proceedings. On these grounds, a stay of execution and the reversal of the decision were requested.

The decision to be made by the Council of State will be decisive not only for İmamoğlu's presidential candidacy but also for the political balance ahead of the upcoming elections. Especially due to the requirement of being a university graduate, a stay of execution decision by the Council of State regarding the process could remove the temporary obstacle to İmamoğlu's candidacy. However, in the opposite scenario, it is anticipated that the judicial process and political debates will intensify further.
