Attention candidates considering law school: Lawyers do not recommend law school

In surveys conducted via LinkedIn and Instagram, participants were asked the question, "Would you recommend this department to candidates who will choose law school?" 

On LinkedIn, 27% (85 people) answered yes, 42% (132 people) answered no, and 30% (94 people) answered absolutely not. On Instagram, 15% (159 people) answered yes, 47% (503 people) answered no, and 38% (412 people) answered absolutely not.

In total, 244 out of 1,617 participants recommended law school, while 1,373 did not.

Attorney Burak Halil Karanfil evaluated the survey results and made the following comments:

Absolutely Not (38%): 38% of the participants (506 people) absolutely do not recommend this department to students who will choose law school. This high rate may reflect serious concerns and negative experiences regarding the current state of legal education and the profession.

No (47%): 47% of the participants (867 people) do not recommend law school. While this group does not have a completely negative perspective, they may represent a segment that does not find the current conditions of the legal profession satisfactory in general.

According to those with negative views, law school graduates may face difficulties in finding employment and professional dissatisfaction. Limited job opportunities, long working hours, high stress levels, and low starting salaries support this view. Furthermore, differences in the quality of education between law schools may lead to graduates not being fully prepared for professional life.

Yes (15%): 15% of the participants (244 people) recommended law school. This group reflects a smaller segment that is satisfied with legal education and the profession or believes that there will be positive developments in this field in the future. According to those with positive views, law school can offer broad career opportunities, social prestige, personal development and awareness, justice, and ethical values.

HALİL KARANFİL: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES SHOULD BE EVALUATED

Attorney Burak Halil Karanfil advises students considering law school to make an informed decision by considering both the advantages and disadvantages of this profession.

"Legal education and the profession can be satisfying and meaningful when chosen with the right expectations and sufficient preparation. However, negative factors such as difficulties in finding employment, professional dissatisfaction, and differences in education quality must also be taken into account," said Karanfil, adding that education policies should be reviewed to increase the quality of education in law schools and to equip graduates with practical knowledge. 

Stating that structural reforms could be made to create more job opportunities for law graduates and to increase professional satisfaction, Burak Halil Karanfil concluded his assessment as follows: During the university application period, students considering law school should be provided with realistic and comprehensive information about the advantages and disadvantages of the profession. Career counseling can be provided for this purpose.
