Former MP Mahmut Alınak sent to prison on charges of insulting the President
Former MP Mahmut Alınak has been detained in Kars and sent to prison after the Court of Cassation upheld a 1-year and 2-month prison sentence handed down to him for allegedly insulting the President in his book titled "Mehmet Tunç ve Bêkes."
The prison sentence handed down to former MP Mahmut Alınak following a lawsuit filed on the grounds that his book, "Mehmet Tunç ve Bêkes," contained insults directed at the President has been finalized. Following the decision of the 4th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation to uphold the 1-year and 2-month prison sentence, Alınak was detained by security forces at his home in Kars.
Alınak, who wrote the book about the life of Mehmet Tunç, Co-Chair of the Cizre People's Assembly, who lost his life during the curfew declared in Cizre in December 2015, and his nephew Bêkes, had been sued for "insulting the President" due to the statements included in the book.
Upon the finalization of the verdict, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office sent a notification to Alınak stating that the prison sentence would be executed within 10 days. Following this development, police teams went to Alınak's address in Kars and took him into custody.
The decision was read to Mahmut Alınak, and the former MP was subsequently processed and delivered to Kars Prison.
