Gives deadline for operations into CHP-run municipalities: 'What I was told is 2 weeks'
Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Fatih Dönmez shared updates on current operations and investigations with courthouse reporters. While stating that indictments regarding CHP-run districts will be completed soon, Dönmez provided details on investigations into organized crime and celebrities.
Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Fatih Dönmez made statements regarding significant ongoing investigations across the city at a meeting held at the Çağlayan Courthouse.
Stating that serious progress has been made in the files concerning the CHP-run Büyükçekmece, Gaziosmanpaşa, and Bayrampaşa municipalities, Dönmez said, "The timeframe I was given is 2 weeks. At the end of this period, the cases will have been filed. The indictments will have been completed," he stated.
Touching upon the processes related to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), Dönmez reported that examinations regarding the subsidiaries separated into files are ongoing, expert reports are awaited, and all allegations continue to be investigated.
OPERATIONS TARGETING ORGANIZED CRIME GROUPS AND CELEBRITIES
Sharing information on recent organized crime operations, Dönmez announced that a total of 392 suspects will be tried in a single file in the case against the criminal organization led by Barış Boyun. He also stated that the process for the extradition of the organization's leader, Boyun, from Italy to Turkey is ongoing. "We have ongoing investigations. In addition to the 305 people being tried on behalf of the Barış Boyun Criminal Organization, cases have been filed against 87 more suspects. The files have been merged, and 392 suspects will be tried in a single case," he said.
Stating that a case has been filed against a total of 181 people, 106 of whom are under arrest, regarding the Daltonlar gang, Dönmez reported that an additional 172 people have been arrested and investigations into 158 separate acts are continuing. Information was also provided that the process regarding the groups named "Şapkalı" and "Gündoğmuş" is ongoing.
OPERATION TARGETING CELEBRITIES
Chief Prosecutor Dönmez also shared statistics on the drug and prostitution operations targeting "celebrities" that have resonated with the public in recent months. He reported that proceedings have been initiated against 255 people to date, 219 of whom have received Forensic Medicine results, with 169 testing positive for narcotics, and that there are more than 30 arrested suspects. He announced that 400 people have been arrested in operations conducted against street dealers in the last two months.
Dönmez further signaled that the operations would continue, saying, "Lists are being prepared again and again. Names, including celebrities and business people, will be taken into custody in stages and invited to our courthouse." The Chief Prosecutor continued his words as follows:
“Our main goal is to reach higher levels. Reaching those who bring narcotics into our country and those who organize it is a matter we approach with more seriousness. We do not want there to be a perception that this is only aimed at celebrities. We believe that with the operations targeting celebrities, we are making society feel the seriousness of the issue. With this perception, we believe we are causing discomfort to the cartels. Society has seen this. We believe it has created awareness in society. This situation satisfies us to some extent.”
