Harsh criticism from Amor: Rejection of İmamoğlu's diploma case is an embarrassment for legal education

Nacho Sanchez Amor, the European Parliament's rapporteur for Turkey, made significant remarks on social media following the dismissal of the diploma case involving Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Following the widespread public reaction to the reasoning behind the case—which was initiated to invalidate İmamoğlu's diploma and ultimately rejected by the court—Amor used striking language regarding the stance taken by the Turkish judiciary.

Pointing to the court's statement that it was "not in accordance with the ordinary flow of life" for the defendant not to be aware of legal uncertainties or potential errors during the diploma transfer process, Amor argued that the decision was incompatible with the law.

The European Parliament rapporteur stated the following in his remarks: "The Turkish judiciary is not afraid of appearing ridiculously biased and unprepared before the legal community and the world. The 'diploma case' is entirely political, and the decision rendered is an embarrassment for the law schools that graduated these judges. Their diplomas need to be reviewed."

Amor's outburst was evaluated as a notable criticism of Turkey's legal system on the international stage.

The fact that Ekrem İmamoğlu is imprisoned during his presidential candidacy process and the diploma case filed against him continue to remain on the agenda in various circles at a time when judicial independence is a subject of debate.

The reasoning behind the dismissal continues to be the focus of criticism regarding the impartiality and transparency of justice.
