Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü fined for insult

A verdict has been reached in the trial concerning the scuffle that took place during a protest in Muğla against the detention of Ekrem İmamoğlu, which occurred as part of an investigation launched into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality last March. After a press statement held in front of the CHP Muğla Provincial Headquarters, a group marching toward the Muğla Courthouse faced police intervention. During those moments, it was alleged that Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü punched a police shield and shouted due to the effects of pepper spray.

Following an investigation launched by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the incident, a lawsuit was filed against Acar Ünlü and CHP Muğla Youth Branch President Nazım Şardoğan on charges of "resisting a public official and insult" as well as "qualified assault."

The defendants and their lawyers were present at the fifth hearing held today at the Muğla 2nd Criminal Court of First Instance. The request for additional examination by Şardoğan's lawyer, Barış Aydın, was rejected. The court sentenced Marmaris Mayor Acar Ünlü to a judicial fine of 46,600 TL for the crime of "publicly insulting a public official," while acquitting him of the charge of "resisting an officer on duty."

Party official Nazım Şardoğan was sentenced to a judicial fine of 15,000 TL for the crime of "resisting an officer on duty," and was also sentenced to 1 year, 4 months, and 7 days in prison for the crime of "intentionally injuring a public official." The court ruled that this prison sentence would be applied as 1 year and 5 months of supervised release under the provision of deferment of the announcement of the verdict.
