New development in the murder of Aynur Kanbur: Crime scene reconstruction conducted after 10 years
Following the death of Aynur Kanbur, a member of the dance group Mezdeke, in an armed attack in 2016, Bülent Gündüz, who confessed to the murder, was taken to the scene as part of a crime scene reconstruction.
In an incident that occurred on the evening of March 24, 2016, on Narçiçeği Street in the Fulya neighborhood of Şişli, Istanbul, 49-year-old Aynur Kanbur, a prominent member of the famous 90s dance group Mezdeke, lost her life after being subjected to an armed attack at the entrance of her apartment building. Multiple shots were fired during the incident, and the shell casings found on the ground could not be linked to any other crime at the time.
New findings were reached as a result of meticulous police work in the murder case, which remained unsolved for a long time. A special team prepared for the case examined security camera footage for months and determined that the attacker had boarded at the Avcılar metrobus station. Police teams compared the information of all male citizens who boarded buses on this line with age ranges and Istanbulkart (Akbil) movements, examining a total of 1,700 people. During this process, the name of Bülent Gündüz, who was revealed to have a kinship tie to Aynur Kanbur, was identified.
Bülent Gündüz, who was taken into custody at the Murder Bureau, confessed to the crime. According to information obtained from authorities, Gündüz stated in his testimony, "She was our relative. People had been mocking us for years because she worked as a belly dancer. In the end, I couldn't take it anymore and decided to kill her."
Describing in detail what happened on the day of the incident, Gündüz said, "I walked up to the front of her house. I waited for a while. Then I knocked on the door, saying I was a courier. As soon as she opened the door, I fired at her and then fled on foot. I walked as far as Beşiktaş. After throwing the gun into the sea there, I returned to my home."
Aynur Kanbur's sister, Dilek Kıymış, came to the police station to give a statement. Kıymış expressed her satisfaction that the killer had been identified following the incident and said: "The suspect says we are distant relatives, but I do not know the person who confessed." Additionally, information was obtained that Gündüz and Kanbur had encountered each other in Bebek in 2009 and argued over her profession as a belly dancer.
