Opened 46 fake bank accounts using artificial intelligence

A notable fraud case from recent times in the Netherlands has been brought to court. It has been revealed that a suspect created 46 different fake accounts at ABN AMRO bank using "deepfake" technology.

According to court documents, after obtaining the identity information of others, the suspect replaced the photo section of these IDs with a photo of their own face. During the selfie verification process used for the bank's digital account opening procedures, the suspect managed to upload the manipulated identity documents featuring their own face into the system. However, the suspect was detected by the system during a match attempt with their own photo on a female identity and was subsequently taken into custody.

METHODS OF OBTAINING IDENTITY INFORMATION REVEALED

During the investigation process, it was determined that the suspect obtained a significant portion of the personal information used through social media platforms and also took advantage of fake housing advertisements published on the internet. As a result of searches conducted on the suspect's mobile phone, identity documents and photos belonging to numerous victims were found. The defendant claimed that this data was sent to them by other individuals via the Telegram application.

"I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE USED IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE VIDEOS"

The defendant, who gave a statement, claimed not to know the full extent of the crime and provided the following defense: "I applied for a job posting I saw on TikTok. I thought I was only sending photos to be used in artificial intelligence-based videos. Then my computer was remotely controlled, the screen went black, and my camera was turned on ten times. Because I was in financial distress, I accepted some illegal transfers," they said.

WHAT WILL BE THE OUTCOME OF THE CASE?

In addition to the fraud committed at the bank, the prosecution requested a total of 30 months in prison (with 6 months suspended) for the defendant for forgery of documents and illegal acquisition of personal data, as well as the payment of 6,240 euros in compensation to cover the bank's losses. The verdict is expected to be announced on March 31.
