Sarkozy loses Legion of Honour
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has lost his Legion of Honour due to a finalized prison sentence.
Under French law, individuals who receive a finalized prison sentence of one year or more have their orders of merit and honour revoked. In this context, the Legion of Honour (Légion d’honneur) and the National Order of Merit (Ordre national du Mérite) held by Nicolas Sarkozy, who served as president between 2007 and 2012, have been revoked. This decision was formalized through a decree published in the Official Gazette.
In December 2024, Sarkozy was sentenced to one year of house arrest and a three-year ban from running for office on corruption charges in the "wiretapping" case. It was decided that he would serve this sentence at home with an electronic tag. Following these developments, the revocation of his honour was expected.
Furthermore, Sarkozy is being tried in the "Libya case," where he is accused of receiving illegal financial support from the administration of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, facing a potential seven-year prison sentence. These cases continue to cast a shadow over Sarkozy's political career.
