Statement from the Van Bar Association regarding Rojin Kabaiş
The controversies surrounding the Van Bar Association's involvement in the Rojin Kabaiş case have come to an end following a joint statement. The parties emphasized that they will act together in the pursuit of justice.
Previous statements regarding the Van Bar Association's withdrawal from the Rojin Kabaiş case caused a significant stir in the public eye. Following the escalation of these discussions, the bar association, the Kabaiş family, and the lawyers came together to hold a joint press conference at the Tahir Elçi Conference Hall.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Van Bar Association President Sinan Özaraz stated that their previous remarks had been misunderstood. Özaraz said, "There were many discussions surrounding the Rojin case that have been causing serious controversy in the public eye for days, and which had somewhat veered off their intended purpose. As the Van Bar Association, we had previously issued a statement. Unfortunately, there were aspects of this statement that were distorted in the public sphere."
Özaraz emphasized that the case is being followed in a coordinated manner by the Van Bar Association, the Women's Rights Center, various legal associations, and the Diyarbakır Bar Association. However, he pointed out that there had been communication issues between the father, Nizamettin Kabaiş, and the bar association during the process. "The father is carrying out this struggle with great pain and suffering. This was what we primarily wanted to convey in our statement, but this situation was distorted," he said.
Özaraz further emphasized that while the private power of attorney relationship has ended in accordance with the Attorneyship Law, they will continue to follow the Rojin Kabaiş case and similar files. "The Van Bar Association, its president, and our female colleagues have put up an effective fight in this case and will continue to do so," he stated.
He also noted that they have filed a criminal complaint against the YYÜ administration and the rector regarding the case, and that the investigation into the dormitory staff is ongoing.
"THE VAN BAR ASSOCIATION HAS NOT WITHDRAWN FROM THE CASE"
"The Van Bar Association has lost heroes like Şevket Epözdemir in the struggle for rights. Every lawyer at the Van Bar Association is putting up an honorable fight. In our legal struggle, we are neither afraid of anyone nor do we seek to profit from anyone. We will remain in contact with Uncle Nizamettin. The Van Bar Association has never withdrawn from this case; only the private power of attorney relationship has ended. Our bar association's institutional identity will continue to follow this case."
Rojin Kabaiş's father, Nizamettin Kabaiş, also stated that the grievances with the Van Bar Association have been left behind. "We came to the bar association and the prosecutor's office with our new lawyer from Diyarbakır, Mr. Abdurrahman. At the invitation of the bar, we came here so that this resentment and bitterness would pass. We are all together in pursuit of Rojin's killer. We are not looking to conflict with one another. There was resentment and bitterness; we came to fix that. The resentment is gone. Our goal is to find Rojin's killers. We will struggle together with the Van and Diyarbakır bar associations and our new lawyers," he said, delivering a message of unity.
The Kabaiş family's new lawyer, Abdurrahman Karabulut, stated that the misunderstandings arising from the controversies have been resolved, saying, "Before taking on Nizamettin Bey's power of attorney, I spoke with our bar association presidents from Diyarbakır and Van. We are aware of those who want to turn this controversy into an opportunity. We needed to clear up the misunderstandings. They listened to each other, and such a controversy will not happen again from now on."
Karabulut also emphasized that the Rojin case is an important quest for justice for the Turkish public and stated that they are open to the support of anyone who wishes to contribute: "I would like to make a call from here. I request that anyone who wishes to contribute to this case, both technically and legally, apply to us. This is a bleeding wound for the Turkish public. Everyone with a sense of conscience should contribute to this case. We will struggle together with the lawyers of the Van and Diyarbakır bar associations to find Rojin's killers."
