Struck and killed at 160 km/h, now released: Father is a businessman from the AKP era

The second hearing for Hürcan Bulur was held today at the Ankara 64th Criminal Court of First Instance. Hürcan Bulur, a member of the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP) who lost his life in a traffic accident on the evening of Thursday, August 24, was only 26 years old.

According to eyewitness accounts, Hürcan Bulur was struck by the driver, who was traveling at 160 km/h, at a pedestrian crosswalk, dragged for meters, and lost his life at the hospital where he was taken.

DEFENDANT RELEASED!

Hürcan Bulur's lawyers stated that there was probable intent and requested that the file be transferred to the High Criminal Court. Continued detention was also among the requests. However, the defendant Sağlamyürek was released.

The lawyers pointed out that the defendant dragged Bulur for meters due to excessive speed during the accident.

It was recalled that in the previous hearing, the defendant had said, "I thought I couldn't stop, so I didn't hit the brakes. I didn't drag him at all." Witnesses heard in court described hearing a very loud noise and seeing the vehicle traveling at high speed.

However, the court panel did not accept the request for lack of jurisdiction. Concluding that the defendant committed manslaughter by negligence, the court sentenced him to 6 years and 3 months and ordered his release. Hürcan Bulur's lawyers stated that they would appeal the decision to a higher court and would continue to follow the process.

'NOT AN ACCIDENT, BUT MURDER'

After the hearing, those following the case chanted, "Justice for Hürcan, not an accident, but murder." Speaking to members of the press, Bulur's mother emphasized that what happened was not an accident but murder, saying:

“I am very sad. I have no half, I have no world. The light in my eyes has gone out. My tongue cannot speak. I am in so much pain right now. I trusted Turkish justice, but I was disappointed.”

'REPORT FROM TESLA CONFIRMS EXPERT REPORT'

Speaking to soL previously on the subject, one of the case lawyers, Aydın Yürek, said, "The report from Tesla confirms the expert report. According to the report, it is stated that for a 100-meter braking distance, the vehicle must have been traveling at an average speed of 160 km/h. The report submitted by Tesla says that a vehicle traveling at 100 km/h can stop in 41 meters. These figures reinforce the assumption stated by the expert that the vehicle was traveling at an estimated 140 km/h."

WHAT HAPPENED?

The incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, August 24. Eyewitnesses at the scene stated in their testimonies to the police that the vehicle was traveling at 160 km/h and struck Hürcan Bulur while he was in the pedestrian crosswalk, and also noted that the vehicle was weaving through traffic.

Again, according to the statements given by eyewitnesses; it is stated that Ö.S., who caused the accident, made many phone calls immediately after the accident and asked the eyewitnesses in the vicinity for the name of the street where he had the accident. It is alleged that in the phone call made by Ö.S., he told the person he was speaking to that he had caused the accident, that the fault was his, that he was traveling at 160 km/h, and that he could not stop for this reason.

The second expert report prepared regarding Ö.S., who claimed in court that his speed was low, serves as a response. In the documents submitted by the case lawyers, it is stated according to the expert report that if the vehicle had been traveling slowly as claimed, the skid marks would not have been meters long, and it could not have caused such damage to the person it struck. In the second report prepared by the expert, the vehicle's speed at the time it struck Hürcan Bulur is estimated to be 140 km/h.

DEFENDANT'S FATHER IS CLOSE TO AKP

According to the report by Sendika.org, the defendant is Özer Sağlamyürek, the son of Bekir Sağlamyürek, General Manager of Dora Makina.

Bekir Sağlamyürek, who worked at ASELSAN from the age of 17, later started working at Roketsan, which is also known for the ease with which AKP members rise within it, and worked there for 15 years. Sağlamyürek, who founded his own company in 2005, does a lot of business with major defense industry firms like ASELSAN.
