93-year-old mother has been caring for her disabled children like babies for 60 years

Gülsüm Karamuk, a 93-year-old living in the village of Çatpınar in the Doğanşar district of Sivas, has two sons, 60-year-old İsmail and 53-year-old Naci, who were born with disabilities; they cannot speak, cannot walk, and are not mentally sound. Despite the hardships of life, Grandma Gülsüm, who has been lovingly caring for her disabled children for years, has never given up on struggling alongside them, meeting all their needs with the support of her daughter-in-law while caring for them with love and compassion every day. Stating that those who abandon their children will pay the price in the next world, Grandma Gülsüm said, “A person cannot have the option or choice to abandon their child. A person cannot abandon their own flesh and blood. Children are a part of their mothers.”

“I HAVE CARED FOR THEM FOR 60 YEARS”

Stating that she has been caring for her disabled sons herself but that her daughter-in-law and daughter now support her because she is getting old, Mother Gülsüm said, “My children have been like this since birth. My other son helps turn them at night and helps with lifting them. I always stay by their side. I am struggling now too; my eyes do not see well. Things slip from my hands. They have been like this since the day they were born. I have cared for them for 60 years from that day to this, and I continue to care for them. I raised them, but I faced many difficulties while doing so. We had animals, we would look after them. We would plow fields; I would do that work and also look after my children. I had to leave them and go graze my animals on the mountain. I would leave a piece of bread by their side and go. I would constantly think about them until I returned. Everything that has happened is from God. I cannot say anything; I am grateful for everything, praise be to God.”
