A fortune found in the house he bought
A homeowner who found pesetas worth approximately 2.5 million Turkish Lira in hidden boxes within the walls of his new home in the city of Lugo said his joy was short-lived.
A citizen named Tono Pineiro encountered a remarkable surprise during renovation work on a house he bought in the northern Spanish city of Lugo for his retirement. Pineiro found six different metal boxes inside the walls of the house, which had been unused for nearly 40 years. When he opened the boxes, he found old Spanish pesetas worth a total of 47,000 pounds, or approximately 2.5 million Turkish Lira.
When Pineiro later went to the bank to convert this money into euros, he could not earn as much as he had calculated. This is because after Spain switched to the euro currency in 2002, pesetas were taken out of circulation, and a specific period had been granted for the exchange of these old banknotes for euros.
Authorities stated that most of the money in Pineiro's possession no longer had official validity. Most of the bills were not accepted because the legal exchange period had expired. However, Pineiro managed to convert some of the more recent pesetas into euros through exceptional transactions. Following this process, he was able to receive cash equivalent to approximately 1.5 million Turkish Lira.
Stating that the remaining old money only holds sentimental value, Pineiro said he decided to keep these banknotes. He spent the amount he obtained on the renovation of the house's roof.
He noted that the house, which he saw on social media, had been abandoned for about 40 years and that the paper money inside the boxes had been protected from moisture by the metal containers. It was noted that the banknotes remained intact, appearing almost as if they had been "ironed."
