Cheated using ChatGPT: The case moves to court

Abdullah Alpaslan, a law student at Istanbul Bilgi University, was suspended from school on charges of cheating on an exam using artificial intelligence.

Alpaslan claimed that the school administration showed his exam paper to the AI, which stated that it had generated the content itself, and that the disciplinary penalty imposed on him was based on this accusation.

According to a report by Melike Çalkap from Hürriyet, Abdullah Alpaslan received a disciplinary penalty on the grounds that he cheated during an in-person exam.

It was later alleged that he cheated using ChatGPT during an online exam, and he was suspended from school for 1.5 years. Alpaslan, who applied to the court, stated that he was accused based on the statement of the artificial intelligence.

While he thought he could return to school with a court decision, his education was halted as a result of the school's objection, and he could not get the fee he paid back. Alpaslan, who shared this situation on social media by saying that his mental health had deteriorated and that he would commit suicide, received significant support.

Istanbul Bilgi University Acting Rector Prof. Dr. Ege Yazgan reminded that the student received a new disciplinary penalty while his previous disciplinary penalty was still in effect.

Yazgan said, "Normally, when students receive a suspension, they can apply to the administrative court. That is what happened here; upon our student's application, the administrative court issued a stay of execution. We objected, and the stay of execution was lifted. The student thought he was entitled to return to school following the stay of execution and paid his fee, but because we objected to the court, this transaction cannot be processed. Because the disciplinary penalty is still in effect."

SCHOOL WILL REFUND THE FEE

Yazgan stated that according to university procedure, if the student's penalty ends and he returns to school, he must also pay the fee for the period he was penalized. However, he said that upon the post containing the financial difficulties and family problems he was experiencing, the university took action, contacted Abdullah Alpaslan, and stated that psychological support would be offered. He also added that the fee he paid would be refunded.
