Economic crisis hits weddings hardest: Guests are being charged

As wedding costs rise, some couples are finding a solution in charging guests an entry fee. 

While this practice, which has begun to spread in the US, may seem logical to the couple getting married, guests are generally not pleased. 

The average cost of holding a wedding in the US last year was 35 thousand dollars. 

According to a report in Independent Türkçe, a TikTok user named Hassan Ahmed living in Houston says he is spending 100 thousand dollars on his wedding next year and is asking for a 450 dollar entry fee from guests. 

Surprised by the lack of response from his 125 guests following this request, Ahmed defends his demand by stating that they spend more money on concerts.

In Turkey, the expectation by some couples that guests pay for their own meals at weddings or post-ceremony events occasionally draws backlash.

According to figures released this year by the Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA), affiliated with the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, the average cost of setting up a new home and holding a wedding reception in Istanbul is 589 thousand 405 TL. While this amount rises to 754 thousand 405 TL for an outdoor wedding, jewelry and honeymoon expenses were not included in the calculations. 

Renting just a wedding hall was calculated at approximately 70 thousand TL, while renting a venue for an outdoor wedding was calculated at 235 thousand TL.
