Snow and precipitation warning for Marmara: Heavy downpours expected in Istanbul
The General Directorate of Meteorology has announced that snowfall and heavy rain will be effective in many regions of Turkey. Heavy precipitation and cold weather are expected in the Marmara Region, particularly in Istanbul. AKOM has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in Istanbul starting this weekend.
According to the weather report for January 11 from the General Directorate of Meteorology, the country overall is expected to be partly to very cloudy, with rain and showers expected in the Marmara, Aegean (except Afyonkarahisar), Western Black Sea, eastern Southeastern Anatolia, and the surroundings of Şırnak, and sleet and snow expected in the surroundings of Bitlis, Van, and Hakkari.
WHERE WILL IT RAIN?
Precipitation is expected to be locally heavy in the surroundings of Istanbul, Kocaeli, Yalova, Tekirdağ, and Kırklareli, as well as in the northern parts of Çanakkale and Balıkesir.
There is a risk of avalanches in the high altitudes of the inner parts of the Eastern Black Sea and on the high and steep slopes of Eastern Anatolia.
WARNING FOR ISTANBUL FROM AKOM
The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has warned that cold and rainy weather will be effective in Istanbul starting from the weekend.
In its statement, AKOM noted, "While the dam occupancy rate in Istanbul is measured at 41.75 percent, the sea water temperature has been determined to be 11 degrees. This rate is hovering at a critical level according to winter season averages. It is estimated that air temperatures will rise to 16 degrees at noon today and drop to 12 degrees in the evening.
The felt temperatures will remain in a similar range. Starting from Saturday, heavy precipitation is expected throughout Istanbul and the Marmara Region. While temperatures will hover between 15-18 degrees, sudden temperature drops and locally severe downpours may be seen," the statement said.
Meteorology expert Prof. Orhan Şen stated that snow is coming to Thrace starting from Sunday night, saying, "Snow may be seen in Edirne, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ, and even in the western districts of Istanbul. Snowfall may also be seen in the high parts of Çatalca and Silivri on Sunday night."
