In approximately 250 million years, it is estimated that all major landmasses on Earth will merge. As a result of this merger, our planet is expected to become extremely hot. This could make life difficult for most mammalian species. A study published last September in the journal Nature Geosciences predicts that this merger will occur within an estimated 250 million years. In the event of this merger, Earth's habitability could be significantly reduced.

Alexander Farnsworth, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Bristol and co-author of the paper, stated, "Widespread temperatures between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius, and even much higher daily extremes, combined with high levels of humidity, could spell our end." In this scenario, other species, including humans, could reach the end of their time because they would struggle to cool their bodies as they would be unable to shed heat through sweating.

The models used in the study estimate that CO² levels will be between 410 ppm and 816 ppm within a few million years. These levels will be close to or twice as high as the levels that currently have the planet in dangerously hot waters.

Ross Mitchell, a geophysicist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences who was not involved in the new study, expressed his view, stating, "The combination of these two factors explains quite well that the situation is a double whammy. If there is one point I disagree with in this paper, it is that they are even more right than they thought."

The researchers' predictions are quite consistent with Earth's past mass extinction periods and our planet's volatile history. Therefore, this could be an example of other times when mammalian and human life on Earth reached the point of near-total extinction.
