Loneliness is on the rise in Turkey! Number of single-person households has increased by 77.2 percent in the last 10 years

According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the number of single-person households was approximately 5.2 million in 2023. This figure represents an increase of 125,494 people compared to last year's figures.

According to TÜİK data, as of 2023, the number of "households"—defined as communities living at the same address, regardless of whether they have kinship ties—was determined to be 26 million 309 thousand 332. Last year, this number was 26 million 75 thousand 365.

Last year, the number of households consisting of a nuclear family with a single parent and at least one child was recorded as 16 million 779 thousand 240. Of these, 10 million 310 thousand 726 were identified as nuclear families with spouses and children, 3 million 673 thousand 768 as families with only spouses, and 2 million 794 thousand 746 as single-parent families with children.

The largest increases in the number of single-person households were generally observed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the last 10 years, the number of single-person households has shown an increase of 77.2 percent.

While the number of single-person households is higher in major cities such as Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, this number is at lower levels in provinces such as Bayburt, Ardahan, and Hakkari. It was determined that the number of single-person households in 10 major cities alone accounts for more than half of the total number.
