Müjdat Gezen visits imprisoned mayors in Silivri

According to a report in Cumhuriyet, Gezen went to Silivri Prison yesterday to visit Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, Adana Metropolitan Mayor Zeydan Karalar, Büyükçekmece Mayor Hasan Akgün, Beyoğlu Mayor İnan Güney, and journalist Fatih Altaylı, who are all currently imprisoned.

In a statement made before the visit, Gezen mentioned that he had been unable to obtain permission for a prison visit for months, saying, "I wrote a petition to the Ministry of Justice three or four months ago. Then I wrote another one. I suppose one is still on its way. I just couldn't manage to get permission."

Stating that he explained the situation to CHP's Ali Mahir Başarır, Gezen said, "One day I told him, 'I have only one problem, I cannot go to Silivri.' He said, 'I can handle it.' Two hours later, he called and gave me the news, saying, 'The permission has been granted, brother.'"

Sharing his feelings after the visit, Gezen said, "We all stayed for a very long time. We chatted with all of them. Their morale is good. But I am someone who has been in Bayrampaşa and Selimiye prisons during two coup periods. That is why I was very sad. It is impossible not to be sad."
