Psychologists on 'ghosting': You can 'ghost' someone to protect yourself
Psychologists state that ghosting is acceptable in situations involving abuse, harassment, or danger. This method can be applied especially against individuals who send unsolicited explicit content or do not respect personal boundaries. However, it is emphasized that outside of such situations, ghosting is not a healthy solution and that it is more appropriate to resolve issues through communication.
Psychologists have shared the situations in which ghosting someone does not create a problem.
The term ghosting is used to describe situations where a person suddenly cuts off all communication with a partner or friend without any visible warning or explanation.
According to a report in Independent Türkçe, psychologist Jennice Vilhauer, speaking to one of the leading US media outlets, CNN, states that the situation becomes more disturbing in these cases because the person is not explicitly rejected.
Stating that ghosting is an acceptable behavior in situations involving abuse, harassment, and danger, the expert expresses that this method can also be resorted to in cases where the other person sends unsolicited explicit photos or does not respect personal privacy.
Pointing out that ghosting is not a good option in situations where such behaviors are not exhibited, Vilhauer emphasizes that one should not give up on communication to resolve the problems experienced.
Gili Freedman from St. Mary's College of Maryland in the US also states that ghosting may be shaped by different relationship experiences and adds:
'YOU CAN RESORT TO GHOSTING TO PROTECT YOURSELF'
Sometimes people may have tried to reject someone before and received a truly angry and aggressive response from that person. Therefore, they may resort to ghosting to protect themselves.
On the other hand, Rich Slatcher from the University of Georgia advises not to overthink it if you are the one being ghosted.
The psychologist states that being ghosted can cause sadness, but this can be overcome in a healthy way with alternatives such as exercising, listening to music, and taking up other hobbies.
