Technology company Dell surrenders to artificial intelligence: 12,500 employees to be laid off
Dell plans to part ways with 12,500 employees as it aims to reduce costs by focusing more on artificial intelligence. Vivek Mohindra, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy at the company, predicted that 12 million workers will have to change professions over the next five years.
Dell began a major internal overhaul this week. In an internal memo sent to employees, Dell executives stated that their goal is to simplify how they work and to redesign business and customer experiences using artificial intelligence. As part of the changes, the sales division has been restructured and management has been modernized. In line with this, Dell has begun the largest wave of layoffs in its history.
A Dell spokesperson speaking to Business Insider said, "We are becoming a leaner company through the reorganization of our marketing department teams and a series of ongoing actions."
Some of the company's employees commented on the changes Dell has implemented that led to them losing their jobs. Since employees are not permitted to speak to the media, all of them requested anonymity. One sales support worker described how work slowed down throughout the entire week as staff waited for meeting invitations in their inboxes.
'12 MILLION WORKERS WILL CHANGE CAREERS BY 2030'
Dell has been testing artificial intelligence tools internally since October 2023 and is now implementing the plan by applying AI to product development, content management, sales tools, and customer service.
As artificial intelligence is adopted in the workplace, roles involving more mundane and repetitive tasks are expected to become redundant. McKinsey estimates that 12 million workers will need to completely change their careers by 2030.
One of those laid off said, "I was expecting this. We are in a new quarter and they are working to make all support AI-driven." Several Dell employees said that while the layoffs were difficult, they understood that artificial intelligence is changing the nature of work.
