The "bay-windowed" and "button houses" in Antalya, which were destroyed in a fire at a threshing floor on the 10th anniversary of the Republic and for which Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk first issued a written order for their reconstruction and then provided support by donating one thousand liras from his own pocket, shed light on history.

'59 HOUSES REMAIN TODAY'

Antalya Governorship Conservation and Restoration Specialist and Cultural Assets Unit Official Cemil Karabayram said, "According to the Prime Ministry Republican Archives; in 1933, during the 10th-anniversary celebrations of the Republic, a fire broke out in the house of Durmuş, son of Hasan Onbaşı, in the Cevizli neighborhood of Antalya's Akseki district, which was a township at the time.

Due to the houses being very close together, their wooden coverings, and strong winds, 105 houses, 60 barns, 3 shops, 3 village rooms, and a mosque burned down, leaving 470 people homeless. Of the 105 houses completed within 2 years following the fire by Atatürk's order, 59 registered button houses remain today," he said.

'ATATÜRK PERSONALLY DREW THE PLAN'

Stating that the first urban zoning plan in Turkey was thus implemented in the town of Cevizli in 1933 by gathering technical personnel at a time when there were no urban planners or map engineers in our country, Karabayram said, "Cevizli is an Atatürk city that has witnessed different periods of history, where Atatürk personally drew the zoning and house plans with his own hand."

Stating that some of the 105 houses built in 1933 in the former town of Cevizli have deteriorated over time, Karabayram added, "There are 59 registered houses remaining today. These houses were taken under protection by being declared cultural heritage in 2002 by the decision of the Antalya Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board. Cevizli also contains archaeological and urban protected areas," he stated.
