Due to the loss of water in Lake Sapanca, which supplies drinking water to Sakarya and Kocaeli, piers have been left high and dry, and boats within the lake have completely run aground. The water level in the lake has dropped to the 30.57-meter mark, which is considered a critical level, effectively triggering a red alert. The Sakarya Metropolitan Municipality Water and Sewerage Administration (SASKİ) has documented the water loss in the lake basin caused by drought, population growth, and unconscious usage. Despite all warnings, the lake basin has receded 17 meters from the shore following water loss caused by reckless irrigation, illegal usage, and other factors throughout the summer season.

The water level of Lake Sapanca, which has a maximum capacity of 32.20 meters, was reported at 30.57 meters in the latest measurements. In a statement issued by the institution, it was noted: “The rainfall experienced in recent days unfortunately did not have the expected effect on the lake. It is not yet known when the rainfall the lake needs will begin. Along with these uncertainties, our water source is losing more water every day. Please be sensitive about this issue. The photographs reveal the extent of the problem. Water resources are not unlimited; let us use them sparingly.”
